with Guest Artist: Róisín de Buitléar

Fragile Correspondence: Printing on the Edge of Glass exhibits individual and collaborative artworks created through a dialog in glass between Róisín de Buitléar in Ireland and Amy West in Italy. Brought together by chance, the artists connected through their passion for glass engraving, the incised line. Exploring the fragility of modern day correspondence, FRAGILE captures traces of hand, place, and moment, through glass and print. Showing diverse engraving techniques and tools, exhibited works are from ongoing correspondence, created specifically for Venice Glass Week. Glass communications between the artists involved each incising or scratching the surface of glass. Printing these engraved plates creates original artworks on paper, each artists’ personal expressions on the importance of making time to communicate, glass engraving is their common language.

Live Glass printing on the streets of Venice

Open to all ages to try, LIVE is glimpse of what will happen in 3 extended AWD workshops on Murano. PRINTING FROM GLASS: WORKSHOPS

Postcards From Venice is a series of three, 3 hour hands-on workshops. International artists Róisín de Buitléar and Amy West demonstrate how to draw, incise and print a glass negative onto paper postcards. Participants will sketch on glass along Murano canal sides, use basic glass engraving skills and learn glass plate printing. Each one will create their own postcard, which can be mailed from Murano to destinations around the world!

Addressing the fragility of modern correspondence, these activities open discussions on virtual and physical communication. Róisin and Amy share the joy of maintaining physical correspondence through hand-engraved and hand printed materials. The workshops demonstrate how the act of making and sending postcards from Venice, captures time and place more intensely and more enduringly, than popular forms of contemporary correspondence.

FRIDAY FURNACE PARTY

Once again this year, the studio campus on the historical Aureliano Toso glass factory grounds, will open its magic doors to the public. Home to over a dozen small business and glass artisans, this campus is rich in history as well as living glass.

The party evening will be a series of open torch, open wheel and open press activities, sharing glass in figurative and literal “cutting edge” ways, as well as showing very traditional Murano artisanal methods. Refreshments will be provided, some music and lots of various entertainment.

Come mingle with other glass makers, artists, friends and visitors, meet local artisans and masters while sipping on prosecco as the evening sun fades. Visit the workshop and gallery spaces, join in for some music and dancing later.
